When I was a kid I had migranes like you described, luckly I grew out of those and have only one like that as an adult (and it wasn't as bad as the kid ones).
I do get frequent 'minor' migranes which I was told and though were 'sinus headaches'.
The excedrin migrane does work but it in itself becomes something of an addiction as its the caffiene that helps more then the asprin (I've tried plain asprin) which can lead to more head aches when it wears off.
Catch 22 really.
