20 year old car? Make sure the spare & jack system are good. Add an old blanket, some jumper cables, maybe a quart of oil & tranny fluid. A couple road flares wouldn't hurt anything.
Can't think of much else. The days when it was handy to have a box full of tools in the trunk are pretty much gone. A cell phone is probably the best tool you can have while out on the road.
