i'm getting this kind of problem on a machine that i'm trying to fix for a friend. i've checked the event viewer (on XP), and the problem is an ACPI illegal-write caused by the BIOS. microsoft's suggestion --- check the manufacturer for a BIOS update.
needless to say, that because this is an older slot-1 board, it didn't work. so i'll be looking for a new motherboard.... this might be what you need to do.
but check your "event viewer"!
