I especially like this quote about religion from Ambrose Bierce:
"Religion: A daughter of Hope and Fear, explaining to Ignorance the nature of the Unknowable."
The way I understand this quote is that because of our fears and uncertainties, we create religion to comfort ourselves. This is similar to what the Greeks did with their mythology.
