I was thinking the same thing. Spoiler:
That old guy with the oranges or whatever probably crashed there previously. There's got to be a reason that being in a group protects the people somehow since the "monster" wouldn't come near the whole group.
It's definitely some kind of Bermuda triangle type thing where others have crashed or been stranded there before.
