It was interesting to watch.
I thought it was overly dramatic, but I agree that Kerry shouldn't have met with the enemy during a time of war. He was not a member of the official US delegation and therefore didn't have any reason to other than his own agenda.
The fact that he didn't do it in enemy territory is secondary.
