A couple of people have posted (here and elsewhere) how they believe in the supernatural, or are religious, or whatever, not because it makes sense, or because they have strong feelings, or anything like that - but rather, seem to think that having delusions of some kind actually enriches life somehow.
Why is this?
To me, resorting to belief shows lack of imagination, a willingness to accept anything one is told, and is symptomatic of a general lack of understanding. If someone believes in Pixies or whatever, it doesn't make them kookie or interesting - it's more indicative of some deep-rooted low self esteem.
Real life, as it is experienced by real people is more rich, beautiful and exciting than any religious, ghost story or super power could ever be. Yes there are things that occur less often than others, and chance really does look like intervention sometimes, but the point I'm making is that allowing yourself to be carried away in a happy delusion does not enrich your life, but detracts from it, makes it less vital, less real, and in the long run makes life less interesting, not more so.
