My problem isn't that they ran the story, because they could have made the simple apology and all would be (fairly) well. It's that after it started to become known that 1) these were most likely forgeries and 2) CBS most likely knew they were forgeries, Dan Rather still defended the story to the death. This shows that either he is much dumber then I thought or that he had a vested interest in the story being run.
