It's not a derailment because it's all about questioning what a person considers the "essence" of marriage and if they actually believe in that essence (by investigating if they are being consistent).
If polygamy and incest seem to fit into a given person's criteria for marriage, then it's very much on-topic to ask if they accept the legitimacy of those things. If they do, good, drop them or discuss their legitimacy in a new thread. If they don't, then this has a
direct relevance to their particular defense of homosexual marriage and they need to explain the apparent inconsistency.
