The spirit world is real, though not necessarily does it conform to popular belief. I believe that if you are going to open yourself up to the spirit world, you need to understand clearly what you are doing, and take appropriate steps to protect yourself from negative influences.
I can't tell you what the most appropriate steps are, not least because they may not be the same for you as they are for me. More significantly, I stopped 'hanging out the welcome sign' quite a long time ago and now experience (or at least am aware of) almost no supernatural activity in my life.
While I am a technically minded person, I believe that the mysteries of the universe are simply far too complex and coordinated to have happened by accident. There is a 'higher power', and there are forces at work in our lives that we do not comprehend.
Best not to play with fire.
