Ouija is one of those things that consistently defies my rational explanations. I think, in fact, that it's the least explainable phenomenon I know of. It's not just hypnotic self-suggestion, group hysteria, or even some super-psychic group mind meld. The strangest paranormal accounts I've ever heard--and I've read many allegedly true stories--involve the board. I've read too many of them with common elements--common unexplainable elements--to toss it off as tall tales, misinterpretation, attention-seeking, or delusion.
What's important to remember, though, is that Ouija is not the ancient ritual that urban legend purports it to be. It only dates back about a hundred years and has no substantial links to any other previous type of game, hobby, or entertainment activity, that I've found. There may be religious rituals with similarities, but I haven't researched there. It wouldn't surprise me, though. How else would a man with an IQ of 91 be in the White House?
