Although I'm not a "Star Wars" geek, I did grow up with the original making an impact on me at age 7 or 8. I don't mean to dispute what you said, because I don't know, but, wouldn't Princess Leia be the top ranking person in the empire who also happens to be a female? And wouldn't her mother also have been the top ranking person on their planet before her death and the death of their planet by the Admiral and that other weasely guy who ended up choaked to death from Darth Vader (if that's correct)? If I'm remembering the characters correctly, I thought their planet was matriarchial.
Although I'm from the original "Star Wars" generation, grew up with the first movies and all, I am by no means (although I wish I was!) an expert on the films, so feel free to rip my comments to shreds! Just commenting on what I think I remember!
