Honestly (from a personal point of view) shooting a gun is much like driving. Sure you could hear some guy blab about this and that. But when it comes down to it, the only way you'll actually be able to do it would be to go out and rent guns.
The 1st time I ever shot a gun, when I was 9 years old. My father took me out to the pistol range. The employee instructed me on some basic procedures. He handed me a .45 with 300 rounds. By the 100th round, I understood the mechanics/saftey/dynamics/ and the recoil of the gun.
That's not to say, a 30 minute instruction wouldn't hurt. But I've always learned better with a hands on approach.
