I think this new S40 (and it's V50 sibling) will do real well for Volvo. First off, it's a big improvement over the previous generation S40/V40. They finally have a decent low-end car for their lineup. And I think its styling is right on for Volvo's target market. As was discussed, it's certainly not the most radical design out there, but it does infuse a certain young vitality to the styling of Volvo's other vehicles. It's fresh, somewhat exciting, and still definitely a Volvo. It's a vehicle designed to bring in fresh blood, and I believe it will do just that. Personally, I prefer the more refined look of the S60, but had that V50 been around when I got my S60... well, the decision wouldn't have been so clear-cut.
I think the center console is a neat idea (and yes, we have the slim console here in North America), but since I've never spent any real time with it, I can't comment on its practicality. neat idea, though.
