This is why I think this sequel will be good. I think he can take the humor from his previous films and create a semi-serious look at these characters in their thirties.
I do think this will be a make or break film for him though. Too much more drubbing like he got on JG and he might not make another movie.

I have no doubt that he can write reasonably well, and some of the dialogue in Clerks, while a little contrived and poorly acted was undeniably hilarious and still is after multiple viewings...
Nevertheless, the man's direction is I maintain, mediocre. Conventional shot after conventional shot. Nothing about his direction is original or striking. Moreover, the script for Jersey Girl was TERRIBLE. 'I'm just a guy who loves playing with his kid in the dirt', 'You're the only thing I was ever good at'... Sappy, saccharine coated, ridiculous, predictable and patronising...
