Overall, I'm happy with it. T'was good fun indeed, but a number of things just bugged/pissed me off. :P
My not-so-quick take on things and/or beefs.
1. "Difficulty, or lack thereof."
Maybe it's just that my cojoņes are the size of the Epcot Center, but I found the game, overall, too damned easy. The only thing I had difficulty with were the
fucking spider bastards jumping and biting at my face in my dreams. Those things just - pardon my French - creeped me
right the fuck out. Don't worry, I plan to play through on Nightmare again on a Soul-Cube fueled rampage to see if it gets rougher.
2. "Bosses? I just saw bigger targets."
The bosses were ... well, pathetic. The first one was the toughest only because I had no idea the crazy bitch was about to start mind-chucking bits of debris at me. Guardian was cake, Sarge got his mechanical clock cleaned, the second wave of Vagarys met a shiny green death ... and the Cyberdemon?
Please. For a ten-story-tall Godzilla of a boss, I was sincerely appalled when he went down with that little fight.
3. "Ammo for all!"
I have no idea if this is my own frugality or what, but I did not have a hard time whatsoever with ammunition. When I got sucked into Hell the first time, I had a full belt of chaingun ammo, 30 grenades, and several dozen rockets, among other things. If I'd known I was going to be stripped of my glowing blue and green plasma arms, I'd have been a little more generous with the death instead of ambushing critters with a single shotgun blast - which, by the way, tears apart all the smaller monsters (up to the tentacle zombies) in a single shot.
4. "Artificial stupidity."
Sure, the occasional "tuck and roll" from a zombie marine is nice, but for the most part, the enemies were monumentally stupid. I took on a Hellknight with a shotgun
because I could. Big lumbering idiot just kept swinging. Swing and a miss - you're dead, bitch!
But despite all this - I still enjoyed Doom 3. There were just too many moments where I went "Holy shit, that's (cool/amazing/scary/OMGWTF)" - like sighting the shadow cast on the wall by the first Trite.
Oh, and by the way, I did
not use any gameplay mods like Duct Tape or Armor Balance. I did use the Trent Reznor soundpack, self-shadowing, and parallax mapping though. Eye and earcandy to further haunt my dreams with unholy multimedia.
