You can disable the firewall, as well as a lot of the extra checks that IE does. It's not hard to do, just go to either the IE Control Panel or the Security Center.
It's an update you want to have, for security reasons, if nothing else. There are, however, a lot of "under the hood" updates to XP that your average user will never know about that make it very worth installing SP2.
