They are a rip-off...
The credit repair agencies will basically save you the headache - so if the fees are worth it to you, then I suppose it isn't really such a bad deal. However, very seldom do these companies wield any more power than your average consumer. They basically have the forms that you can download online, will fill them out for you, and then send them in. If they blew you off, the certainly could blow off the company as well. Make sure that before they are paid they actually get the items removed from the bureaus. If you have already paid them, instead of harassing the credit reporting agencies to remove the items, you may end up harassing the credit repair service to harass the credit reporting agencies...
