Yeah, you're thinking of GAIN, or Gator, not Gaim, which is an instant messaging program. (By the way, it's gaim or Gaim, *not* GAIM or gAIM - legal issues).
As for the problem of Gaim crashing every time you IM someone 4evar, I'm not really sure. Only time Gaim has crashed for me after an IM was when I was direct connected to someone and they sent me a significantly large file through that. Not a common occurance though and I can't always reproduce it.
