hehe I felt the same way about trillian when I used it (quite a while ago now). It felt bulky and too focused on making it look cool. I'm usually more towards minimalism w/ my programs.
gaim is fairly standard right out of the box. No flashy graphics or anything, but it does it's job well. All depends on opinion, I guess.
