I'm one of the die-hard Trillian fans. In fact, I liked it so much I actually paid for the Pro version. I remember trying Gaim awhile back and never really liked it. With Trillian's XML style skinning, if you know what you're doing, you can customize it to look however you want to for the most part.
The concept of both programs is good, though. I use MSN and AIM at work and use the "official" versions instead of lumping them together with Trillian and am very sad by this. I'm too used to finding all of my contacts in one place, having all of my IM windows look and behave the same way.
And don't even get me started on how bloated, nasty, and awful the new Yahoo client is...
