Kids and Moods

I just walked outside our apt this evening. My daughter and a neighbor boy that I'm watching were playing but seemed to be constantly argueing tonight.

Then there's the other little one I"m watching who just woke up from a nap. She's normall pretty cheerful then but actually is refusing to go out and play (out of character for her) and when asked if she'd like ANYTHING her answer is no.

Then, while standing outside I hear another child in the neighborhood. Judging by their tone, volume, and sound of their voice they are around the toddler to preschool age. They are screeching and crying in the temper kind of cry - not the hurt kind.

Then there's the neighbor behind. I can hear her daughter fussing and her mother saying a harsh "No". My neighbor across from me is yelling at the eldest for teasing the youngest who is currently crying. And last but not least there's another neighbor down the way with a small 1 yr old who is crying/screaming for some reason.

I noticed in the store today (we were only out for about 10 min) that there were two children, one of which had tossed himself on the floor and his mother picked him up, buckled him into the cart and continued on. His compaints didn't last long as she ignored them and they had no effect on her. So he quit his usless fussing.

I mention all those children to simply say this. I've taught before and worked with children long enough to know that they all seem to get in this cranky mood around the same time. In school it's often affected by the weather, the seasons, and the current studies. The worst time is in January when the kids are unable to go outside as much, the excitment of Christmas is over, and it's the longest stretch of classes without breaks. I've noticed that children get these little peaks and valleys that almost seem to coincide with the full moons as well.

Does anyone else notice these things as clearly? Or am I just making excuses for the kids in a way? Would you agree that there's just something with the cycles of the moon or whatever that affect human moods and attitudes this greatly? How does this affect you individually? Personally during January I get the blues and get cranky of course. Partly this I attribute to the kids moods though. Everyone tends to get a little of the winter blues too I think. Is there anything we can do to counteract this affect? Do I sound almost superstitious about this?
