Well in Alien 3 the face hugger impregnated a dog, and to most people it seemed like any other alien. But in fact it had more characteristics of a dog than the previous aliens. So we are left to believe that the alien will take on characteristics of what ever it is cocooned in. Hence the "predalien" larva.
