If the employees are paid on an hourly basis and work more than 40 hours a week, their employer is required to pay them overtime, which is time-and-a-half. If they dont, then they are breaking the law.
Im pretty sure this doesnt apply if you are salaried.
I know tons of people that work more than 40 hours a week. I work in a department of programmers--development isnt a 9-5 job most of the time.
