I do not mind dreads at all - in fact, I think they are kinda cool - AS LONG as its not a termite nest, and does not smell bad.
There's definitely a way to keep dreads without forsaking personal hygiene, as your original post seems to suggest.
Sounds like you are doing a good job at maintaining quality dreads, and I commend you 
If I didn't shave my head, I could possibly pull off a decent set of dreads. Possibly...
