I certainly understand how that is a tricky situation. I'm extremely loyal to people I care about and can't stand to see them in a bad situation. But I also hate being pushed into doing things, and if someone told me I *had* to stick up for them, I'd be inclined to do the opposite just for spite.
Do you have a source of income? If so, just pay the electric bill and say "There. Now you have nothing to gripe at me about, so leave me alone."
