This is the kind of question that usually makes my mind explode with possibilities. An idea of mine was similar, a kind of mix between Privateer/Elite and and old fave of mine, the Independence War series. Many modders did what they could with I-War 2, but I suppose what gets me the most these days is potential not realized. If they had another few months, iron out the kinks, they could have had more of a gem, but then again, it's nothing if the sales don't reflect it.
Anyhoo, I-War 2 universe, free flowing economics engine operating in real time with a constantly operating traffic engine in the background. Take a contract engine and a more advanced varient of a reputation system as per Freelancer, add the concept of hireable wingmen, be capable of flying a freighter, make a more robust wingman comms and AI suite, and planetary bases and drops and you have a universe I can live in, and a game which would likely tank at the box office.
Arguably, me and anybody else really into the I-War series wanted this, a fully realized dynamic universe.
Oh, and more types of "terrain" (an old term from Klingon Academy, nebulas, planetary rings, etc.) . If I had a freighter with five droogs in formation on a high risk cargo run from Hoffer's Gap to some ass-tee-royd belt just outside the MCA Lagrange and every pilot from here to the edge of eternity eyeing my cargo, comms static and the whole nine yards, I'd be in heaven until I starved myself to death from sitting in front of the computer for too long.

Monty this seems strange to me.
The movies had that movie thing,
but nonsense has a welcome ring
and heroes don't come easy.
