How Do You Use Effects While Your Guitar Is Plugged In?

straight to the point. We all know you can hook your your guitar with a adapter and a patch chord to yoru comp. Now you can play and such, but is there a program that will give you effects while you play? More Detail below...
Is there a software that will give you effects for your guitar on your computer? I know about Acid Pro that will give you effects, but it's after you've already recorded the track. I was wondering if tehre is a program that will give me the effect while I play it, and would be able to record it into sound recorder or anything. If there is can you please tell me the software please. Thanks for yoru time.
