It's pretty much supposed to stay there until it starves to death, or you find it and hit it with something big and heavy to take care of it. It's really best to just kill it, starvation is no fun. I've used the blade-end of a good shovel to give a quick, guillotine-like ending.

I also had one of the little buggers start to chew limbs off to get away, but i passed on using the shovel and used a cinderblock. Wasn't high on my list of things i wanted to do, but dammit, i drew the short straw and was elected to kill it to put it out of its misery. At least i wasn't on clean-up crew... that was one hell of a mess.
