My parents don't let me have nice things. :P No, actually its just because we live in a small town in a nice county, but I really only have one story about a thief.

This happened when I was in middle school; I don't remember a whole lot about class during that period of my life because I spent most of it reading various novels for entertainment. My book bag at that point was a computer case from the really ancient Apple computers; basically a big tan cube. This was good because I never used my locker; the space between periods were too short and every class gave a tiny bit of homework each night. Anyway, I was sitting in front of the gym waiting to be picked up by my parents, with my book bag sitting to my right. I hear the distinctive squeak of the breaks on my parent's Volvo from my left where the loading area started, so I look over there as I stand up and put my bookmark in. I then turn to my right to heave the 20 something pound monstrosity onto my shoulder.

And its not there. Where could it be? Its not like it can FLY away, my back was to it for just a moment. I am sitting on flat concrete with the nearest structure a good 40 feet away from me. It is about 3:35 PM, and broad daylight.

Hmm, I wonder. Maybe its that guy 5 feet away from me powerwalking away with my bookbag. Now, you would know your own stuff when you see it, but ANYONE would know this bag is mine. How often do you come across a 2 foot tan padded cube bag?

I of course stop him immediately and retrieve my bag, while he mutters some excuse about how he picked up the wrong bag. Yeah right, I would bet that there wasn't another bag like that in the state. However, I just wanted to get home and since I was in a public school I didn't feel a lot of anger at him wanting to take my textbooks.

But I had to wonder. WTF was he thinking? How would he think I would not notice? I was right there, and your peripheral vision gets pretty good when you read a lot. What did he think he was getting?! Did he really need notebook paper, or maybe was planning to sell my math book on the blackmarket?

To this day that attempted theft still puzzles me.
