My parents had purchased a pretty nice used El Camino. One morning my step-dad goes out and it's gone. They did not have theft insurance so they were out of luck. They report it stolen, the police take the report and tell them that chances of recovering the vehicle are slim.
Fast forward 11-1/2 years later....my parents have since retired and left CA (where they were living when the car was stolen). They get a letter from the California Highway Patrol stating that they have recovered the car. Not only did they recover the car, but it has a very nice paint job, the engine and transmission have both been recently rebuilt, and the car is in better shape now than it was when it was stolen. The original thieves had swapped out the VIN w/ a VIN tag from a 1/2 ton chevy pickup and sold the car. the guy who bought it had owned for the past ten years and became curious about why it was registered as a 1/2 ton truck and not an El Camino....the DMV suggested he have it inspected by the CHP and they ran the numbers off the frame, which came back as my parents car.
Sunday morning I went out to my car and quickly realized that my radar detector and my cell phone charger now belong to somebody else....I hate thieves
