Sorry this happened on your birthday. What a drag.
Can't say I would have acted the same way. Kudos to you for keeping your cool, but with the witnesses that were there, I would have had no problem with him throwing the first punch. All egos aside, you do have a right to defend yourself and if someone threw a punch at me, I doubt there would be any hesitation on my part to defend myself.
