When you are looking at the main forum menu, there should be a little clickable phrase:
view new posts
Clicking this runs a search that will bring up a list of threads that have been added to since you last logged in. I don't use it anymore, but it is a good way to keep up until you develop your "favorite" forums... Definitely don't forget the journals. In some ways that is the most personal area on this site.
