The consummate Ozzfest 2004 thread
So, how many people have been/are going to go to any given date one this year's Ozzfest tour? I went just the other day to the one at Jones Beach on Long Island and it was absolutely incredible. The spirit was a bit diminished in that Jones Beach is owned by Tommy Hilfiger and therefore alcohol (among other things) is outlawed... so the normal Jaegermeister sponsor trucks with free crap weren't there, and some of the stands had words on shirts censored with duct tape... otherwise it was outstanding. No bands were truly horrible (though there were some whose music i despise), and many bands were fucking incredible. On the second stage I'd have to say the best band was Every Time I Die. I had never really heard them before Wednesday and I was fucking BLOWN AWAY by their show, it was fucking crazy. I walked out of there with a signed copy of their CD, I was so impressed. Just an awesome performance. As for the main stage, it's tough to say who was the best but it's between Slayer and Judas Priest. Slayer did a fucking awesome, albeit shorter than they deserved, set, with mostly reign in blood-era tracks. Priest, however, had a 75 minute set in the middle of a lightning storm and Rob Halford sounded as good as he ever had. They were fantastic though, utterly flawless. As for the other bands on the main stage, Black Label Society were good but rushed in their short set, Superjoint Ritual's music was outstanding but Phil Anselmo was being a dick with his whole "Pantera's Dead" tirade he went on (prompting a "SHUT THE FUCK UP" chant from the crowd), Dimmu Borgir were excellent though they didnt play any of my favorite songs of theirs, and Black Sabbath were surprisingly good. Geezer Butler looked as good as ever on bass and same with Tony Iommi at guitar. Ozzy is obviously a mere shadow of his former self BUT his vocals were great despite his frailty. Bill Ward didn't look so great, and although he played well on drums, he looks like he's giving up the ghost. All in all though they were solid.
