Here's my first post.....cloaking device off.

I'm quite a fan of Japanese punk/hardcore/grind etc. I used to be much more involved when I was collecting records actively, but I still love these bands, especially older (early 90s) material. Been listening to a lot of Balzac lately, who, if you don't already know of them, are the best non-Misfits clone of the Misfits on the planet.

I highly recommend you track down the 3CD compilation "There is Hardcore Making A Entry in 2000," which has shitloads of good tracks by almost 60 bands, including Bollocks, Protess, Hyper Hindu Squatters, Youth Enrage, Bashment, Stink Gaspers, Damaged Youth, Exorgrindst, Ehrgeiz, and lots more.

I have a strange fondness for Japanese streetpunk and Oi as well as what's called "melocore" in Japan (essentially melodic oi/hardcore crossover like Gruesome or Tetsu Arei), especially older bands with highly suspect politics like Sledgehammer (Tettsui), Ouka, Bull the Buffalos, Ikazuchi, Bad Vultures, Raiya, Side Burns, Miburo, older Eastern Youth, etc. Can't forget even older bands like the classic Cobra, Laughin' Nose, The Griffin, Angry Ducks, Mamats, etc. And I really like the whole Western Japan scene following the early 70s Chiswick sound: bands like The LRF, The Creed, Blade, The Hawks, Crikey Crew, etc. There are a number of newish bands that are really good - Yoroi, Strong Style (ex-Cannons), New Dawn, Warmachine, etc.

I used to have tons of rare records in this vein like the "Japan Movement" 12", Sledgehammer/Ikazuchi split 12" on Steve Priest Fan Club, Gruesome - "Throw Light On" 7", V/A - "Kick to be Alive" 10", blah blah.

Be warned that a lot of bands on the oi! end of the spectrum have VERY absurd politics. Then again, their politics are somewhat comical considered in the context of their miniscule fanbase and bourgeois lifestyles. But they make great music.

I could go on and on about Japanese grindcore too, but I'll just mention Bathtub Shitter for being totally brilliant. And I'll also shut up now.
