To me a really haunting song is something that can happen more likely than not.
There is a spoken word song on the Paris, Texas sound track that is vocalized by Harry Dean Stanton and the music is slide guitar by Ry Cooder.
It's about a couple drifting apart and a man soo desperate that he chains her in to keep her there and then... well listen to the song. He speaks it to a child.
Creepy. Sad. Haunting.
PS- Nick Cave rules. You should see him in the original german language movie Wings of Desire and his novel "And the Ass Saw the Angel" is just pure poetry. Dark and graphic as hell.
