I think performing (at least classically, since that is all I know) requires all of your concentration and focus - but in an "open" manner, meaning you are alert, mentally nimble, aware of everything around you, and extremely reactive to what's around you. For me, this can only mean playing clear.
As for your second question, I see people using pot more than anything else around me. I think the jazzers go more for alcohol, but that is probably environmental, since they often work in bars and nightclubs (and are sometimes partially paid with an open bar).
