The problem most of the "big name" computer compnays is that they really don't care about the end user. If you have a problem such as your, they would rather just sell you an upgrade.
Go with what wonderwench said and try and find a local repair shop to fix it. I do stuff like that all the time on the side and save customers hundreds of dollars. My aunt has a Gateway and they wanted $199 for a 128mb DIMM and that was just for the part. It would have cost her another $80 to have it installed somewhere. I bought the DIMM for around $60 and put it in for free since she was a relative (She made me dinner

Unless the unit is under warranty, do not call the company for service. Go to find a local company. Or, chances are one of the guys in your company's IT department can do it on the side. That's how I get a lot of my business.
