Sounds like you've got valve clatter. The lifter clearances need to be checked. While cold, everythig is too far apart, but once the parts heat up and expand, it will be within the acceptable range. If your engine can safely use a thicker oil, that might fix the problem, but I prefer to do things the right way so they don't come back and bite me in the ass later.
