I used to roll up paper towels, wet them, and put them into the container, but it was messy. Any part of the brown sugar that touched the towels would mix with the water, and turn into hard white sugar that had to be thrown out.
So, the concept of the little clay disk wasn't exactly foreign to me. I just thought it was neat that someone had put that concept into disk form. Less sugar comes into contact with the disk, so less sugar is thrown out.
