One way of ruling out heartburn as the pain causer would be to drink a glass of water. The water should wash the acid back down and temporarily stop the pain. If it continues then something else is the problem.
I had wierd chest pains once, went to the dr. office and found out it was my sturnum (sp?). The dr. pushed in on both my ribs and the pain went away instantly. She said it was like joint pain and could've been cause by a change in the weather!
