In the 18th century, when the Revolutionary War was fought what we did was reprehensible. A King's will was NOT to be questioned. That was abhorrant at that point in history. As kutulu said, the US fought for their independence; they weren’t invaded and told this is how you will live from now on (I'd say that was a huge difference). You might like your way of life, but not everyone in the world wants it.
