I used to teach Tae-Kwon-Do, Hapkido, Jiu Jutsu to a school of 300. So lots of sparring matches.
Real fights? only ever been in two - but not "adult" life.
First one was for my little bro when I was 12. (he was 8). Some big bully kicked him in the nuts, so I had to step up. Threw one kick to his back - he couldn't walk. (he had missed a haymaker at my head)
Second one - someone jumped myself and buddy with a gun. Wanted our cash. I just learned a jump spinning crescent kick, only been at it for a week - but was enough to kick the gun out of the guy's hand. Pure luck. He brought it up the exact same way my teacher raised the target pad. (which I still thank him for)
That was before I knew what I was really doing.
Now that I've seen real combat (not sport fighting anymore) and have trained a little in it. I never want to fight again. It's too dangerous, and people can really get hurt. (we get hurt enough - just sparring)
I second the thought on everyone learning a little self defence, but keep an open mind. No one style "beats" them all. And really learn what the founder was trying to accomplish. Martial arts are supposed to make you a better person all around. Not just a fighter.
