the only reason i can think of to have an empty stomach is that a full stomach can make you feel sick when you exercise ... i think cos the blood gets diverted to other parts of the body and your stomach shrinks a little... so to play safe probably eat a while before and give it time to settle down
so neither full nor empty but somewhere in between, is my opinion... i don't really worry about it myself though
