Stiltzkin

I was wondering if anyone here knows if it is possible to enter kana/kanji as input in the US release of Final Fantasy XI? I understand a very tiny bit of Japanese and I wish I could reply to other Japanese players whenever I understand what they're saying using proper kana/kanji. I already tried setting up my local OS settings to allow me to enter kana/kanji, but these settings don't seem to affect FFXI. Does anyone have any info regarding this?
