I personally would probably wait till after I'd had the baby. This is for a couple of personal reasons.
#1. Within the first 2 months of pregnancy my breasts started swelling and itching like crazy. I actually grew a whole cup size during pregnancy. I would imagine that having nipple rings, especially if not totally healed yet, could cause even more irritation.
#2. I nursed for 3 years. Even if you nurse for 6 months (nursed every two hours and many times more often than that to begin with.) I wouldn't want to constantly be having to remove and put the rings back in during that time so most likely would just leave then out - this is just me. I would think they may close up if that's they way I did things.
#3. I have heard (this is just hearsay I have not substatiated this) that in some cases (rare) the piercings can interfer with the milk ducts and/or cause scar tissue and causing some minor problems with mastitis.
#4. I got thrush on my nipples and my nipples cracked and bled because my daughter had a poor latch due to the morphine and other drugs I had to be on as a result of my emergency C-section. Any minor infection on normal nipples could mean a worse infection with pierced nipples since there's a place the thrush could hide and grow and you wouldn't be able to clean as easily possibly.
I'd personally wait - In my opinion, if this is something that I really want, I CAN wait and still feel the same about it a year from now. If there were any problems with infections or whatnot it would be easier to care for. Keep in mind I have not had nipple piercings but I have gone through pregnancy and breastfeeding which was for those 3 years.
