It's interesting how the persona of the Democrats and the Republicans have changed over time. The Republicans took over the mantle of the "racist party" after the Civil Rights Act, just as the Democrats have lost the label of the "working man's party" by pandering to big money and forgetting their original message.
Of course, neither the naked uber-capitalism of Andrew Mellon or the animated populism of William Jennings Bryant would get very far today. Our candidates are makeup-caked, focus group tested, living head shots that are designed to be as blandly popular as possible. The most common demoninator strikes again!
