If you're going to make a simple one like they show, make sure that the bricks protrude at least 3 layers above the surface of the grill for wind shielding. I would also make the walls 2 bricks wide instead of the single brick configuration they show. If you really wanted to get creative you could also build a chimney for it.
Personally, I would make the base of the pit solid brick and do away with metal grate for the coals. It would give you better thermal stability for constant temperature at the cooking surface. It also eliminates coals falling through the grate and landing by your feet.
