Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
What a great game. I pulled it out again the other day, and it still holds up. The great thing about it is that it isn't bound by reality. I'll tell you what I mean. Civ 2/3 are both great games, but are structured around the real world. The real world isn't a balanced place that makes an easy transition to a game with historical accuracy. In that sense, SMAC has an inherent advantage. (As you might have guessed, I think it's better than those two games)
Not that it needs it. The balance is great, the gameplay is great, and the setting is complex and realistic. It's not perfect, and it's time consuming to play, but there's a reason that PC Gamer gave it the highest score any game has ever received (last I checked; it got a 98%, and nothing was higher).
Anybody else play?
My favorite faction right now is Morgan, though I'm going to start a game as someone else here in about 20 mins.
