I'm a registered unaffiliated, and I'm happy that way. The party system is the result of a single fact; people who bond together have more power.
The democratic process is inherently one of choosing the "lesser evil." It's the nature of compromise; you pick the best option out of what is available. The diverse nature of American opinions guarantees that no candidate is perfect, but a choice between two poor candidates is better than no choice at all.
Consider what would happen if we had more parties, and each were equally represented. There would be no popular or electoral mandate, and progress would be stymied. Imagine how much slower things would be if no party controlled the majority of the House or Senate, and a third party controlled the White House.
